(Robert Parker's rating: 97+ points)

(James Suckling's rating: 99 points)

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron, generally referred to as Pichon Baron, is an estate in the Pauillac appellation rated as a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. As with other top Pauillac wines, the grand vin is prized for its combination of powerful dark fruits, finesse and elegance, and ability to age for many decades.

The vineyard is situated at the southern end of Pauillac, bordering Saint-Julien and across the road from Château Latour. Its 73 hectares (180 acres) are planted with around 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 35 percent Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

A larger Pichon-Longueville estate existed until 1850, when it was split in two. Baron Raoul Pichon de Longueville inherited one part, with the remainder being passed down to his three sisters as Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (aka Pichon Comtesse). The imposing, much-photographed château was begun by the Baron in 1851. Pichon Baron has been owned by AXA, the French insurance company, since 1987.

Tasting Notes:
(Robert Parker's rating: 97+ points)
The 2019 Pichon-Longueville Baron will go down as one of this château's great wines of the modern era, along with 2016, 2010 and 1989. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, sweet loamy soil and violets, it's full-bodied, velvety and layered, with superb concentration, lively acids and rich, powdery tannins. Perfumed and resonant, this is a profound young Pauillac that bears more of a resemblance to its neighbor Château Latour than to Pichon Lalande this year.

(James Suckling's rating: 97-98 points)
Blackberries and blueberries with stone and graphite. Flint and black licorice, too. So perfumed. Full-bodied, very long and linear with incredible length. The new 1990, but better crafted. Chewy, yet so tailored and wonderfully proportioned. Freshness and elegance. Wonderful depth. 87% cabernet sauvignon rest merlot. The highest ever proportion of cabernet.
